New Year Projects
With the completion of the Ambulance Project we are looking for a new challenge. Given the lead times before we actually have to commit funds, plus our ability to spread spending over more than one year, we are not limited to one major project. We will finalise the choice by end of June and we are currently assessing 4 main possibilities.
To work with Melkbos again, this time on a project with the school for Deaf children. This would offer the possibility of levering in greater funds through Foundation. It would also offer the chance to develop links with local units for deaf children at both Llanishen High and Coed Glas Primary Schools.
To support AIDS work in South Africa, also with Melkbos Rotary Club as a local partner.
To build on past initiatives supporting Eye Camps, and glasses collection, probably by funding purchase of Optyse ophthalmoscopes for use in connection with Eye camps etc.
Developing a new connection with a charity to focus on water or agriculture in Africa, which are fields we would like to get into. This approach would give us the secure local partner we seek but would not allow leverage of more funds.
Shelter Boxes
We have supported this project in previous years and it is very worthwhile given the number of disasters there seems to be worldwide. In 06/07 we purchased 2 boxes. In 07/08 we will develop links with local schools and those involved in the Club’s youth projects, to see if we can involve them in fund-raising. Our target for 07/08 will therefore be to purchase 2 additional boxes, as well as those we purchase from Club funds. This will be the main project in which we can get personally involved via contact with schools, public events etc.
Shoe Boxes
As in previous years, these will be filled with foods and toys etc. and we normally fill these for November, in time for Christmas.
Eye Camps
(Or to give it its official title “SSI International Comprehensive Eye Services SSI Rotary's African Vision”). These are based in India and Africa and the objective is to prevent blindness, restore sight and to support blind people. Financial support will be provided.
Tools for Self Reliance
We have been collecting tools for self-reliance for some time and although we’ve not made a big push on them, the tools still come in. We will continue this. We have also collected old spectacles for recycling.
We will review how effective our contribution is to this since other organisations are also active in the area. Since there is little effort and no money involved we will maintain this unless it is clear that the results do not justify it.
